US law firm helps Brighton football fans - Robert Eaton Memorial Fund
Solicitors Pro Bono Group

How a US law firm helped Brighton football fans' memorial fund stay the right side of complex charity law.

Those of you who have visited Brighton on a Saturday afternoon you may well have come across many a blue and white scarved individual. These are the dedicated fans of local football club, Brighton & Hove Albion or to the more familiar with 2nd division football, The Seagulls! one of these fans was Robert Eaton, so loyal to the club that even when he moved to New York, he remained a regular contributor to the supporters' website.

On what has now become the infamous day of 11th September 2001 Robert's messages to the website ceased. His fellow fans later learnt that Robert had become one of the many victims of the World Trade Centre disaster. As a memorial to Robert, his fellow supporters held a charity football match raising funds to open a soccer academy for deprived children in New York. The match was a great success attracting attention of both local and national press and, perhaps more importantly, the Charity Commission. The supporters although acting with the very best of intentions had unfortunately failed to be aware of and hence comply with all the regulations required for such a charitable venture.

The London office of US law firm, White & Case, entered onto the pitch and are now guiding the supporters through the regulations and giving some invaluable advice and assistance. Football is clearly dear to the heart of White & Case and there is even now talk of fundraising by an inter office World Cup!
